The CIC Virtuhcon (Virtual High Temperature Conversion) innovation skills center is a multidisciplinary center for the development of concepts and new technologies around high-temperature conversion processes. Due to their high energy consumption, those processes are caught between the needs of the modern life and the demands of sustainability and climate protection. Virtuhcon’s aim is to develop new concepts for efficient high-temperature conversion processes, with a significant reduction in terms of time and money. The key to this is process virtualization: comprehensively depicting processes by means of numerical simulation. Previously, this approach was successfully applied to entrained-flow systems. Virtuhcon will extend this strategy to high-temperature processes in metallurgy and the chemical industry, the main focus being on high solids content as found in fluidized-bed and fixed-bed systems. Reliably modeling such complex multi-phase systems is challenging and can only be achieved thanks to Virtuhcon’s existing multiphase models.

The “Deutsche-Brennstoffinstitut DBI | bergakademie“ is situated in Freiberg. It’s objective is to consolidate scientific expertise and knowledge in a national scientific and technological centre focused on developing sustainable technologies for fuel and carbon utilization. It achieves this through pooling existing knowledge with new research insights in the fields of fossil and biogenic carbon resources. The DBI bergakademie is closely linked to the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. Through intensive exchanges with its extensive network of industry and scientific partners, it is possible to bring numerous research projects with both German and international partners under one roof. Its activities range from exploration, extraction and characterisation of carbon resources through mechanical, physical and chemical processes via both low and high temperature conversion routes to the evaluation of entire process chains as well as assessment of alternative utilization potential for produced products.
